Eastern Cape DJ Zezethu “Zethu M” Maki released her highly anticipated debut single Vukani on Friday.
The Ngcobo-born artist’s career started to take flight after she enrolled in a DJing academy in 2021, owned by DJ Ester.
“Growing up in a small town, I always loved music but never thought I would become a DJ,” she said.
“All that changed when I moved to Mthatha and met people such as DJ Ester, Mist SA, and the late PK Dweba, who mentored me and gave me the opportunity to develop my passion for music.”
Beyond her musical career, Maki is the CEO and founder of well-known Mthatha-based Levels Beauty Studio, where she specialises in selling high-quality weaves, makeup and hair installations.
DJ Zinhle has shown me that it’s important to build a strong brand both in and out of the music industry
The 33-year-old musician said she looked up to DJ Zinhle, who recently praised her song on TikTok.
“Her majesty has been the one I’ve looked up to for years.
“She has influenced me to be professional, not just in music, but also to explore other avenues, especially entrepreneurship.
“It can be difficult for a female DJ to get the recognition she deserves, and DJ Zinhle has shown me that it’s important to build a strong brand both in and out of the music industry,” she said.
The talented DJ has partnered with Avee Connexion Holdings for the release of her debut single.
“Working with Avee Connexion Holdings has been a blessing in disguise.
“The director [Aviwe Gqomfa] has been a close friend for many years and always knew I was a DJ and had always believed in my craft.
“I was surprised when he approached me three months ago, and within that short time, I can already see my brand moving in a new and exciting direction.
“I’ll forever be grateful to him for this opportunity.”
Maki has collaborated with Mdantsane-born duo Element Boys and solo artist Masi on the song, and said she wanted to work with them to help promote local talent.
“As a DJ, I am versatile. I specialise in three-step and Afro house.
“I’ve been following Element Boys for a while now and fell in love with their style of music, which fits perfectly with my own.
“My team and I approached them for a collaboration, they agreed and I’ll forever be grateful to them.
“I also have to say that Masi is a beast when it comes to vocals and is a great songwriter.
“Vukani has been receiving airplay on radio stations before its official release, such as Umhlobo Wenene FM, Metro FM, Ukhozi FM, Gagasi FM, and Tru FM.
“I never expected that my debut single would already be played on radio stations. It’s a true blessing.
“The song carries a powerful message of encouragement.
“It tells people to ‘wake up’ and get on their feet to hustle, to try new things, and to better their lives.”
Maki said she was already working on an upcoming EP, which was set to be released in about October.
