SACP deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila is among witnesses set to testify at the Zondo commission that the ‘engine room’, an elite group that included former public protector Thuli Madonsela, advised Jacob Zuma on the structure and policy direction of his government ahead of the 2009 elections - laying the groundwork for state capture.
Though there is no suggestion the advisory team is linked in any way to corrupt activities, Zuma’s use of it is seen as proof that he was quite prepared to outsource the ANC’s mandate.
