The long awaited trial against NSFAS big spender Sibongile Mani, 29, resumed this morning at the East London Regional Court.
Mani, chairwoman of PAC student body Pan African Student of Azania (Pasma) and Arts and Culture SRC officer at Walter Sisulu University, is accused of wrongfully pocketing more than R800 000 of NSFAS money in 2017 after R14m accidentally landed into her student account.
At the time she received the money, she was the secretary of Pasma.
She was meant to receive R1400 for her meals but a “system error” added extra zeros into her student card.
Court documents show that soon after the money was deposited into Mani’s account on July 1 2017, she allegedly immediately went on a shopping spree and blew R810 000 in 73 days.
She allegedly spent the money on fine food, expensive alcohol, clothing, gadgets, air tickets and wild parties on campus.
The third year Accountancy Diploma student’s lavish lifestyle came to an end after rivals in the ANC-aligned South African Student Congress (SASCO) ousted her to WSU and NSFAS management.
This morning in court she looked less glamorous and was in the company of five loyal supporters from campus.
