The start of Women’s Month has been marred by the violent deaths of three women in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.

Police said the women were apparently all killed by their boyfriends or “someone close to them”.

A love triangle in Butterworth ended in tragedy when a 27-year-old man killed his girlfriend, allegedly after she had found him with another woman.

In a separate incident, police are investigating a case of murder after Nolundi Vumsindo, 44, was stabbed in front of her 10-year-old daughter in Centane on Saturday.

Police said the woman was asleep with her daughter when an unknown man entered her house and killed her.

The child was not hurt. The suspect ran away, and the motive is still unknown.

The daughter has been referred to social workers for counselling.

In East London, a woman who may have been raped was thrown off a cliff near the pedestrian crossing bridge between Toilet City and Braelyn outside East London.

Duncan Village resident Bukiwe Mapeyi said the woman was found lying in a pool of blood by residents on Saturday morning.

“Police were called to the scene, but what is so painful is how women are still not safe after all the efforts to help our community become a safer place,” said Mapeyi.

Police spokesperson Capt Hazel Mqala said a 45-year-old man had been arrested.

“It is alleged the 37-year-old victim left her home in Toilet City at 6pm on Friday and went to enjoy herself with friends.

“[She] then met two suspects in a certain tavern who took her to their shack in Braelyn.

“It is alleged the two decided to rape and stab her to death.”

Mqala said the second suspect was still at large.
