Major-General David Mhlangenqaba Kanuka's position, as the first police commissioner of OR Tambo district, may be brand new — but, he says, the things that need policing have not changed at all.

Kanuka says his priorities will be to fight abuse of women and children, witchcraft killings, stock theft, circulation of illegal firearms, cash-in-transit heists and business robbery.

As police cannot succeed on their own, he is keen to form partnership with kings, traditional leaders, church leaders, businesses, tertiary institutions, and all other sectors of the district community.

''We must ensure that we are all fighting crime in unity to make the OR Tambo district safer. We must ensure we have police officers who are motivated, moral and committed to the service,'' said Kanuka.

''The safety of residents comes first and it is our responsibility to ensure we are making the area safe. We cannot tolerate killings, abuse of women and people being accused of witchcraft.”

Among the areas he highlighted as hotspots was Qumbu's Sulenkama, saying stock theft was rife there. He also spoke out against the proliferation of illegal firearms in Bhityi and against stock theft killings.

Lusikisiki has a high rate of witchcraft killings, which he is determined to bring to an end.
