An elderly East London man was shot and wounded on Monday in what appeared to be a mysterious shooting.

An elderly East London man was shot and wounded in a mysterious shooting incident on Monday morning.

The 72-year-old victim was shot in Two Rivers Drive, Dorchester Heights.

Circumstances that led to the shooting were unclear at the time of writing.

Both police and Red Alert Security confirmed the incident to DispatchLIVE on Monday afternoon.

“Today we were phoned by a member of the public that a man had been shot in Two Rivers Drive Dorchester Heights,” said Red Alert owner Brett Harvey.

It's alleged that a bakkie had stopped and someone in the vehicle shot him and drove off.

“Our emergency medical services crews and armed response officers were dispatched to the scene and found the 72-year-old man with a bullet wound to his thigh.

“It's alleged that a bakkie had stopped and someone in the vehicle shot him and drove off. Our medics treated him on the scene and then took the patient to Frere Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.”

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci said circumstances surrounding the incident formed part of the police investigation. ​ She wouldn't dwell on what led to the shooting.
