Troubled Eastern Cape health MEC Sindiswa Gomba will know before the end of this week whether or not she will keep her job.

Oscar Mabuyane is expected to make a decision on Gomba's fate by Friday, after he had been directed to do so by the provincial ANC top brass on Monday.

The party’s provincial leadership on Tuesday confirmed to DispatchLIVE that it had ordered its provincial chairperson and premier to “take action” against Gomba by the end of this week.

Gomba had on Monday appeared before the ANC's virtual provincial working committee (PWC) meeting. Gomba had been called upon to account for her alleged role in the near acquisition of the R10m scooter ambulances by the provincial government in June 2020.

This meeting came days after she had appeared in court last Friday with 14 other people and companies in relation to the re-enrolled charges relating to the BCM Mandela memorial scandal.

It also came after the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) had recommended that two health department executives, Gomba and former head of department Dr Thobile Mbengashe, be criminally prosecuted for their alleged roles in the scooter procurement process.

ANC PEC spokesperson Loyiso Magqashela on Tuesday said that Gomba was yet to give her side of the story to the party as the Monday meeting felt the virtual platform was not sufficiently safe to discuss such a sensitive matter.

“A decision was that she will then meet with the provincial leaders physically and make her presentation. That will have to happen soon as the party felt that this process should be dealt with by the premier before the end of this week,” said Magqashela.
