The reward for the “lost” Glenwood monkeys has tripled as an investigation into their disappearance intensifies.
The reward, which was R1,000 last week, has now increased to R3,000, with concerned members of the public footing the bill for the location of the troop of Vervet monkeys in the George area.
Garden Route SPCA manager Salome Bruyns said they had formed a joint operation with the Glenwood Conservancy to find the monkeys as numbers had dwindled to one.
Bruyns said the monkeys had been missing for a couple of months.
“There were rumours that someone was catching the monkeys but at this stage it’s only speculation and I cannot say for sure if it is true.
“We are busy with investigations now and following all possible leads.
“We need someone to come out with information about the troop.
A resident who did not want to be named because the situation was sensitive, said there had been posters put up around the town regarding the monkeys.
“The monkeys had been in the area for over 40 years and seldom leave each other behind.
“There is reason to believe that this one is the one that has escaped,” she said.
Anyone with information regarding the monkeys is asked to contact Bruyns on: 044-878-1990.
