Two videos showing an Eastern Cape man apparently attacking police after he allegedly went on a rampage and stabbed a 55-year-old man to death while leaving four other victims wounded have gone viral on social media.
With both his hands in his pockets, he could be seen staring at police who had cornered him before reacting as if he was about to take something out. Pandemonium soon erupted when a loud bang was heard as he took on police and onlookers. He was then quickly overpowered and arrested.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moitheri Bojabotseha said the incident happened next to a taxi rank in Maletswai (formerly Aliwal North) on Saturday.
“It is alleged that that the 28-year-old suspect randomly attack and killed the 55-year-old victim with a knife and also stabbed other four victims using the same knife without any apparent reason,” said Bojabotseha.
“The victim died at the scene and the other four victims, aged between 21 and 38, were admitted to the Aliwal North Hospital for treatment with multiple stab wounds.”

The suspect appeared briefly in the Aliwal North district court facing murder and attempted murder charges. He was remanded in custody after the case was postponed for June 10 for further investigation.
“We, as the SAPS, will definitely oppose bail at his next appearance,” said Bojabotseha.
Acting district commissioner Brigadier Rudolph Adolph applauded the members on their swift reaction to apprehend the dangerous suspect. Rudolph sent his condolences to the close family and friends of the deceased .
