AWalter Sisulu University student was found dead outside a Butterworth tavern on Saturday.
The first-year civil engineering student’s body was identified by a fellow student.
The deceased's friends said that they had looked for her at about 10pm, after she failed to return from the bathroom.
“The University condemns acts of violence of any nature on and off campus. Violence against women and children has reached unprecedented proportions that should be a great concern to everyone,” said WSU spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo.
Tukwayo said the university was still waiting for an official police report.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said that police were investigating a case of murder.
Kinana said community members informed police about a lifeless body found at a tavern in Ibika.
“When police arrived on the scene, the 20-year-old girl was found dead,” said Kinana.
“Circumstances (surrounding the student's death) are not known. The investigation continues.”
This is a developing story.
