An Eastern Cape off-duty nurse died after he drove his car down a cliff from the notorious Port St Johns Airstrip over the weekend.
The 32-year old was identified as Zukisa Nkosiyaphantsi, who has nursed at St Elizabeth Hospital in Lusikisiki since February, the provincial health department said.
Police spokesperson Brig Tembinkosi Kinana said: “It is alleged that at about 8.50am, five people were at the cliff taking photographs when the 32-year-old got into the car and started it. The vehicle then careered off the cliff.”
He said it took several hours for the search and rescue team to retrieve the body.
Health department spokesperson Yonela Dekeda on Monday said at the time of the accident Nkosiyaphantsi was alone in the vehicle.
“The department is saddened by this tragic and untimely passing of a colleague who was still in the prime of his life, and at a time when his whole career stood before him after completing his community service and commencing full-time employment at St Elizabeth Hospital.
“We extend our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends,” Dekeda said.
The cliff has claimed the lives of about five people since 2010.
