ANC MP and regional leader Princess Faku announced her resignation from the national assembly effective Friday.

Faku, a member of Parliament’s police portfolio committee made the announcement during Wednesday’s sitting.

Faku emerged as number one on the ANC PR councillor candidates list for Buffalo City Metro after the local government elections. DispatchLIVE reported in October that Faku was tipped to become the next mayor.

She has since been tipped as a favourite to take over from Xola Pakati, who was at number three on the list. A reliable source in the national assembly said the announcement was not surprising.

“Since she has made it to the top of the PR list chances are that she is preparing for her new challenge, if she takes the mayoral position. That can be the only explanation for her move because she can’t be MP and mayor at the same time. Friday is her last day and we will probably hear about her inauguration soon,” said the source who asked to remain anonymous.

The ANC has, however, since made it clear that mayors and other PR councillors would be interviewed and their selection would be based on educational background and experience among other requirements.
