Two men have been arrested in Gqeberha after a truck carrying goods worth millions of rand was hijacked.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said the driver of the truck was accosted in the early hours of the morning while heading to Oudtshoorn.
“The driver and his passenger were travelling in a Nissan UD truck stocked with groceries on the N2, close to John Tallant Road.
“It is alleged that at about 3.10am, a white Nissan NP200 bakkie suddenly drove past the truck and the passenger pointed at the driver with a firearm and ordered him to pull off the road.
“The suspects then took control of the truck and the two victims were ordered to climb into the Nissan NP200 bakkie and were later dropped off in Motherwell.
“After a few hours, the security company noticed that the truck driver was not travelling as scheduled and the police were roped in to assist,” Swart said.
Swart said during the combined operation between various police units, the truck was found abandoned at about 7.30am on the R75, outside Kariega, with some of the load missing.
“Further information was immediately followed up on and a large quantity of the grocery items were recovered at 9am on a farm nearby.”
She said a VW Caddy and a Nissan NP300 vehicle were also found, with some of the stolen property already loaded into the vehicles.
The estimated value of the recovered goods amounted to more than R2.2m.
She said two men, aged 31 and 34, were arrested at the scene.
The charges range from hijacking to the possession of stolen property.
The men are due to appear in the Kariega magistrate’s court on Friday.
Swart said more arrests were expected soon, as the provincial organised crime unit in Gqeberha was following up on further leads.
