Police were on the scene of an apparent murder-suicide where a 65-year-old man fatally shot his 39-year-old wife before turning the gun on himself in Despatch on Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbours said they heard multiple gunshots coming from the house at about 12.30pm and immediately alerted the police.

Rinando Zandberg, who had been supervising a building project opposite the house, said the husband and wife had been arguing shortly before the shooting.

“I first heard them arguing inside the house and then shortly after that the first four gunshots went off.

“Then as she was trying to run out of the house, he grabbed and pulled her back in and more gunshots went off.

“She ran out again.

“Just as the police arrived, he shot himself inside the house.”

Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said police were investigating a case of murder.

This is a developing story.
