Tributes have been pouring in after the death of Phakamisa George, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation’s acting trade, investment and innovation head.
George died on Friday, at the age of 52, after a short illness.
Born in the small town of Middledrift, George, fondly known as Phaki by his friends and colleagues, was “a fine gentleman and professional who made an immeasurable contribution to the development of the Eastern Cape”, ECDC chief executive Ayanda Wakaba said.
George joined the ECDC in 2008 as the head of the risk capital fund.
“The early years of his ECDC career were spent in the risk capital function, which he proudly referred to as ‘the investment hatchery and pipeline for ECDC’,” Wakaba said.
“In this role, he distinguished himself, playing a leading role in the development of innovative projects such as the Giant Flag in the Valley of Desolation in Graaff-Reinet, the development of a bamboo industry, essential oil projects and the development of the berry corridor, among other projects.
“Phaki was instrumental in leading interest in investment into the dietary fibre project.”
Family spokesperson Sonwabo George described him as a kind-hearted and caring man.
“He loved peace and encouraged it whenever he got a platform or a chance to speak,” Sonwabo said.
“He also contributed to other people succeeding in their endeavours.
“We will always miss him.”
“He was one of the catalyst figures in the establishment of our strategic partnership wherein the landmark Eastern Cape Exporter Development Programme was established.”

Premier Oscar Mabuyane said George had played a pivotal role in unlocking new export opportunities for the province.
“We convey our deepest condolences to the George family,” Mabuyane said.
“Under his guidance, the Eastern Cape became a notable hub for exports.
“Eastern Cape products such as cattle, sheep, essential oils, wine, wool and mohair found their way to international markets.
“He was part of our delegation when we visited Tunisia and Egypt as he was a key figure in our investment drive.
“We salute him for the stellar service he rendered to the province.”
The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber also paid tribute to George, describing him as “one of the biggest supporters of project Eastern Cape, dedicating his life to the advancement and development of the provincial economy and driving efforts dedicated to connecting Eastern Cape businesses and [the province’s] economy with the world”.
“He was one of the catalyst figures in the establishment of our strategic partnership wherein the landmark Eastern Cape Exporter Development Programme was established,” chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen said on behalf of the board.
“It was his passion for the development of local SMMEs that has seen this partnership provide export readiness training to 49 emerging exporters, with many good stories to tell on its impact.
“It is safe to say none of these strides would have been possible without the passion, commitment and support of Phakamisa for this programme.”
Wakaba said George recently led the ECDC trade and investment function, where “he distinguished himself and made a discernible impact and contribution”.
“In a limited period, he demonstrated an acute understanding of the trade and investment ecosystem, playing a crucial role in the co-ordination of the 2022 Eastern Cape Investment Conference where R46bn worth of investments was announced.
“His ability to nurture stakeholder relationships was equally remarkable.
“[He] was well-loved and was an affable companion.
“ECDC colleagues will miss his legendary storytelling and contagious laughter, even during difficult times.
“We will remember his never-say-die attitude and his incredible work ethic.
“[He] never shied away from a task and was always available to lend a helping hand.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult period, praying for strength and comfort,” Wakaba said.
George’s memorial service is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the Calvary Church in Quigney , at 3pm.
The funeral service will be held at Calvary Church in Quigney on Saturday, at 9am.
He will be buried in Middledrift.
George is survived by his wife, children, parents and siblings.
