The DA picketed outside the City Hall on Thursday ahead of a council meeting to put pressure on speaker Eugene Johnson to debate a motion to reduce Nelson Mandela Bay's punitive water tariffs.
The motion was not debated at the last council meeting.
The council meeting is now in session.
Outside City Hall, DA members and the party's Eastern Cape provincial leader Andrew Whitfield were part of the picket.
They carried placards, saying: “Stop the punishment lower the water tariff”.
Whitfield said they were picketing to get the council to focus on issues that matter to the people instead of politicians.
“We often see chaos through motions of no confidence, instead of debates about matters that will improve the lives of ordinary citizens of this city,” he said.
“Today is a reminder that the council is dealing with the business of the city.
“We are highlighting the water tariffs issues which we will table a motion today to put pressure on council because the cost of living in SA is too.
The combined dam levels were at 79.07% on Tuesday. The Impofu Dam was sitting at 44.29% with the other four at 100%.
