A 36-year-old woman travelling on a bus from Bloemfontein to East London was arrested by flying squad members after allegedly being found with R3m worth of drugs.
The arrest followed a tip-off.
Police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the woman had been pointed out at the bus stop on the East London beachfront on Friday.
“Police then requested permission to search her bag, which was granted by her.
“Upon searching the suspect’s bag, they recovered drugs suspected to be tik.
“Fifteen bricks of crystal meth were found in her possession.
“Drugs weighing 20.5kg in total with a street value of R3m were confiscated.”
The suspect was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs and will appear in the East London magistrate’s court on Monday.
In the OR Tambo district, Operation Shanela netted two suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Mawisa said police had received information about a vehicle whose owner was suspected of being in possession of an illegal firearm.
“They spotted the vehicle and, on trying to stop it, the driver recklessly tried to flee but was cornered and stopped.”
On searching the two occupants, the driver was allegedly found with a 9mm pistol and ammunition.
An R5 magazine with ammunition, loose 9mm live rounds of ammunition and 36 R5 rounds were also found in the vehicle.
Both occupants were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and also reckless driving on a public road.
In Lusikisiki, Majola and Libode police arrested three suspects aged between 60 and 64 for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality spokesperson Sonwabo Mampoza said Operation Dudula had been conducted during the weekend by public safety and traffic management and the police.
“More than six vehicles were towed away for reckless parking.
“A man between 30 and 35 years old, who claimed to be a police officer in Gqeberha, attempted to interfere with the operation as his colleague’s vehicle was towed.
“Stop-and-search was conducted and liquor was found.
“Some motorists did not have driver’s licences and other vehicles did not display registration plates or licence discs.
“The operation moved on throughout Mthatha and some vehicles were towed away.”
