Five members of the East London indoor cricket team, selected to represent Border in an upcoming tournament in Pretoria, took to the streets at the weekend to raise funds for their trip.

The team members, who each need R12,000 to cover their costs, on Saturday took to the Old Transkei Road in Nahoon to encourage passing motorists to make a donation.

The team had placards displaying their plea around their necks, with a message that read: “We’ve been selected to represent Border IPT U/21 Indoor Cricket Team. Seeking sponsorships/donations to help us realise our dreams. Only four weeks left.”

The team have been picked to represent Border IPT indoor cricket in a tournament in Pretoria from June 15-23.

Their proud coach, Nathan Rowe, who joined the weekend donations drive, said they were seeking financial assistance and potential sponsors.

Rowe said the response had so far been positive.

“They are going away and need the money to make that happen.

“Participating in the tournament is not cheap, and the way to do this is to involve everyone to assist our youngsters.

“They are leaving in the middle of June and the costs include money for kits, flights and accommodation. We have a few weeks left.”

For each participant to make the team, they first had to win the hearts of the judges during trials.

Rowe said he had no doubt the team would excel.

“Last year they did very well. They played against people who were older than them and came fourth overall.”

He said the team was growing and showing improvement every day.

“The oldest player is 18 and the youngest 16, and they are playing in the under-21 category.

“They are all growing in the sport and that’s all we ask for,” he said.

Excited captain Tristan Rowe said they were confident of victory.

“We are really pumped. We are confident and it’s an honour to be playing for Border.”

Tristan said this year the U21 team were eyeing gold.

One fun aspect of the sport was that it ran all year long, “so if it rains you can play, if it’s hot you can still play and, besides, we all love the sport”.

One of the youngest players, Juan Nel, said they looked forward to representing Border.

“I am super-excited, especially because I will be able to bond with my team mates,” he said.
