Six people died in a horrific head-on collision involving two sedans on the N2 outside Mthatha in the early hours of Friday morning.
Provincial transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the accident took place about 1.45am when a VW Polo and Suzuki Swift collided head-on near Qweqwe village outside Mthatha.
The deceased included both the drivers, Binqose said.
“Six people, all males died on the scene while three others, also men, sustained severe injuries and were taken to Mthatha Regional Hospital for treatment. A culpable homicide docket has been opened into the accident.”
Friday’s accident happened less than 24 hours after another person was killed on the treacherous N2 route, following another head-on collision between a fully loaded taxi and a sedan on Thursday.
Binqose said eight other people had been injured and had to be rushed to hospital.
“It is alleged that a VW Polo was trying to overtake when it hit the taxi head on. The driver of the sedan died on impact while the injured were in the taxi,” he said.
