An East London taxi boss has been arrested in connection with drugs and an unlicensed firearm.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Siphokazi Mawisa said the 54-year-old taxi owner was arrested after the execution of a search warrant by tactical response team members in Gonubie on Thursday.
“Police acted on information about a man in possession of drugs and unlicensed firearm and they executed the search warrant in a house at Mzamomhle township, Gonubie, outside East London,” she said.
“Police approached the house and informed the owner of the search warrant they obtained and, upon searching, they found an unlicensed firearm (Norinco), SAPS uniform belts and ammunition of different firearms.
“On investigation police discovered that the firearm’s serial number had been filed off and they arrested the suspect for possession of unlicensed firearm.”
He is further charged for failure to safeguard his own firearm and ammunition and it (a 9mm Taurus) was confiscated by police.
The police investigation continues.
The suspect is expected to appear in the East London magistrate’s court soon.
District commissioner Maj-Gen Christopher Wright appreciated the valuable information shared by the public and also “the tactical response team that did not waste any time in arresting those who break the law”.
He sent a strong message to the community that the police would stop at nothing in ensuring that those involved in criminal activities were prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
