On day six of the BackaBuddy campaign to save the life of Abigail de Lange, the amount raised by 511 donors reached  R323,132.

The outpouring of support from the East London community comes after the 10-year-old girl from Christmas Rock was involved in a freak accident on Thursday afternoon.

She is also going to be slowly taken out of sedation, and will hopefully open her eyes and wake up in the coming days.

The campaign created by cousin Nikita van Ghent has received a wave of donations ranging from R100 to R10,000 towards the goal of R500,000.

Called “Christmas Rock’s Angel”, Abigail has been under sedation in the paediatric ICU at Life Beacon Bay with severe skull and head trauma since Thursday after being hit by a telephone pole.

Family representative and sister Loghan said on Tuesday: “There were some positive indicators today, when they were suctioning this morning she had a slight sensitivity and responded with a cough.

“There was also a little tear that ran down her cheek, and when they did the observation on her pupils they were responsive yet sluggish due to morphine.

“They have upped her sedation dosage just as a precaution before the brain scan that is scheduled for tomorrow.

“We just continue to ask for your prayers, and thank you for your continued support.”

Abigail was walking from a local playground when a delivery truck leaving the grocery store snagged a sagging telephone line stretching across the main road.

The force pulled over the pole it was connected to, and the falling pole hit the young girl on the back of the head.

The family does not have medical aid to cover the emergency medical expenses, even after a down payment of R100,000, Loghan said on Friday.

On Wednesday, Abigail’s condition was improving.

Loghan wrote on a public WhatsApp group: “My parents have seen the [neurosurgeon] and he said there is still bruising on a piece of the brain but the swelling has gone down.

“They are going to start weening Abby off the sedation, and the neuro is happy with the progress that he sees.”

Kidd’s Beach Primary School is hosting a civvies day on Friday to help raise funds for her medical care.

The family has also received private EFT donations but is still calculating the final amount.
