A 43-year-old  Eastern Cape female school teacher will appear in the Mthatha magistrate's court on Tuesday in connection with the murder of her 28-year-old nephew last month, with the hit suspected to be linked to insurance payout monies according to the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said the suspect taught at a school in Libode. The victim was reportedly found with a gunshot wound on the head in Slovo Park informal settlement in Mthatha on July 17.

“Investigations by the district’s detective team led to the arrest of two alleged hitmen, aged 23 and 28, on July 26. They implicated the 43-year-old female teacher [in the murder],” he said.

“A Z88 9mm pistol which was reportedly robbed at Madeira police station was recovered.”

The lady teacher was arrested in Balasi village in Bhisho on Sunday shortly before 6am. Matyolo said the suspect’s own husband had reportedly been brutally murdered in 2022 and that “the investigation into that matter is ongoing”.

He said it was believed the reason for the murders was to cash in insurance claims monies. The investigation was now at an advanced stage.

OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Pumzile Cetyana meanwhile commended the detectives for the arrest saying they should leave no stone unturned in getting to the truth about the murders and bring the murderers to justice.
