Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Ward 19 councillor Gamalihleli Maqula was shot in the leg during a robbery in the city on Wednesday.
It is understood Maqula was attending to a resident that required assistance in Kwazakhele when gun-wielding thugs approached, forcefully got into his vehicle, and then drove away with him still inside the car.
It is further alleged the suspects then forced him to transfer money from his banking app, and used his bank card to withdraw further cash.
Thereafter, they shot him in the leg and dropped him off in North End.
Maqula is recovering in hospital.
Bay council speaker Eugene Johnson confirmed the robbery and shooting incident, but was unable to divulge further details at this stage.
“I'm not in the city currently and therefore don't have all the details of what actually happened in terms of what was taken [from him].
“I will go visit him when I return tomorrow [Thursday],” she said.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Mount Road police officers attended to a complaint in Matthew Lane, North End, at about 12.15pm.
“On arrival, they found the complainant who alleged that he was hijacked in Makubela Street, Kwazakhele, and was later was dropped in Matthew Lane with a gunshot wound to his left upper leg.”
Janse van Rensburg said Maqula did not want to give an official statement to the police while at the scene.
“At the time he did not want to make an official statement. The SAPS member on the scene will open a skeleton docket of attempted murder for further investigation.
“The man was taken to hospital in a private vehicle,” she said.
