A rural Eastern Cape community has been left shattered after a young mother and her three children, along with two of her brother’s children, were found dead in Ku-Bha village near Flagstaff on Friday.

Their bodies were reportedly discovered at about 10pm in one of the rural homesteads in the village.

The village falls under the Winnie Madikizela Mandela local municipality.

The victims have been identified as 27-year-old Ziyanda Rubela, her daughters Anobom, 9, and Athandiwe, 7, and four-year-old son Asemahle.

The other two victims were identified as Rubela’s niece and nephew, 10-year-old Endinakho Zikhali and her younger brother Siphosethu, 7, who had been visiting on the day of the tragedy.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said though no foul play was suspected at this stage, investigations were under way.

“Police are investigating cases of inquest following an incident that claimed the lives of a woman and five kids,” she said.

Winnie Madikizela Mandela municipality mayor Daniswa Mafumbatha said the community was still in shock at the incident. She said they were awaiting postmortem results that would reveal how the family members died.
