Popular TikTok entertainer Lonwabo Siyo, known for his hilarious videos and lively personality, took social media by storm on Wednesday; not for his humour this time, but for graduating with an LLB degree.

Fans were stunned to discover that the 29-year-old funnyman also has a deeply serious and determined side.

Raised in Mqanduli as the youngest of two children, Siyo grew up surrounded by cousins he calls siblings.

“Referring to them as cousins feels wrong. We literally ate from the same bowl, shared clothes, and bathed in the same water,” he said.

One of the hardest parts of his childhood, he said, was grappling with his sexuality.

“People mocked my feminine side. I was even homophobic towards myself.

“It was frustrating that no matter how hard I tried, I could never be like the other boys I grew up with.”

It was his family’s unwavering love that helped him come to terms with his identity.

“Their support helped me grow confident in who I am.

“I wouldn’t be the person I am today without both the highs and lows. They shaped me.”

After matriculating from St John’s College in Mthatha in 2015, Siyo took a short course through the Eastern Cape department of education and became a foundation phase teacher at Mqanduli Village Full-Service School for a year.

In 2016, he enrolled for an LLB at Fort Hare University in East London.

His studies were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which took a toll on his mental health.

It was during that difficult time that his sister, Chulumanco Siyo — now his social media manager — encouraged him to start creating TikTok content.

“I was miserable. She said, ‘Try posting something, just for fun’.

“I had no idea it would resonate so widely.”

While some may assume his career choice was inspired by the courtroom drama, the gowns, the language, Siyo said his motivation stemmed from personal tragedy.

“I was 19 and in matric when my brother was murdered.

“It was said the perpetrator was someone from our neighbourhood, but justice was never served.

“It was painful, and I knew then I wanted to fight for families like mine.”

He added: “Also, I’m naturally argumentative and opinionated. People who know me will tell you, I don’t let things slide without a challenge.”

Siyo now plans to pursue a master’s degree and gain practical experience before deciding which area of law to specialise in.

“This degree gave me the confidence to go further. I’m just getting started.”
