The Mthatha magistrate’s court on Tuesday granted bail to Manelisi Mampana, the  54-year-old Walter Sisulu University (WSU) official accused of fatally shooting a student.

Mampana, the WSU acting residence manager, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The incident occurred in April at the KGB residence on the Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha, where students were protesting against poor living conditions in NSFAS-accredited residences.

Sisonke Mbolekwa, a 24-year-old third-year education student, was fatally shot, and another student was wounded.

Mampana was granted R10,000 bail with strict conditions.

He has been in custody since April and was placed on precautionary suspension by the university.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice, with families of the victims and the student leadership expressing disappointment over the bail decision.
