Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers has deployed its disaster response team in response to extreme weather conditions that have struck South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The intervention follows a Level 6 weather warning that has brought strong winds, persistent rainfall and significant snowfall to the region over the past 24 hours.

Authorities have reported severe flooding and the evacuation of multiple communities, with the Amathole District Disaster Management Team, Mnquma Local Municipality and local leaders issuing urgent calls for assistance. The town of Butterworth and its surrounding areas have been particularly affected, with reports of extensive destruction. Community halls have been opened to accommodate families displaced by the floods.

Gift of the Givers has confirmed that its teams are currently en route to the region, carrying emergency supplies including food, blankets and other essentials.

“The situation is dire. Our teams are mobilised and are working closely with local authorities to provide immediate relief to those affected,” a spokesperson for the organisation said.

Further reports suggest that additional districts within the Eastern Cape are also facing worsening conditions and have similarly requested aid. The situation remains fluid as the province continues to contend with the impact of the severe weather system.
