When 23-year-old Siphosihle Bhe moved from a private school to a state school with fewer resources, she struggled with language and confidence.
But joining a school book club helped her express herself better and enjoy learning again.
That experience inspired her to start the Literary Legends Book club in 2023 in Zwelitsha township in Qonce.
The club gives young people, from the ages of eight to 35, a safe and creative space to read, write, debate and grow.
She believes reading can change lives and that investing in literacy is investing in the future.
Despite facing funding challenges, she continues to push forward, working with local NPOs such as Amplifying Youth Voices to support more pupils and promote a love of learning in her community.

Bhe said through reading and book clubs young minds were empowered, critical thinking was fostered, and a love of learning was cultivated, so that reading even in challenging times became a habit that turned into a hobby.

Bhe works at Da Gama Textiles, taking a gap year from her accountancy studies at Nelson Mandela University due to financial constraints, and runs the book club every Saturday.
Though the book club has no permanent premises, she hosts most events at the Steve Biko Foundation which had been sponsoring the club with a venue since the beginning.
The club focuses not only on literacy but also on mental health and wellbeing, especially for those with limited access to resources.
It raised awareness, reduced stigma and promoted open supportive conversations about mental health.
“We believe literature has the power not only to inform and inspire but also to heal,” she said.
“Through reading and thoughtful discussion, we create a space where individuals feel safe, understood and connected.”
Bhe believes book clubs naturally foster a sense of belonging, offering an outlet for self-expression, emotional release and meaningful connection.
“Whether through the comfort of a relatable character, the catharsis of shared stories or the gentle support of community, we have witnessed the transformative role that reading and dialogue can play in nurturing mental health.
“It’s about seeing people grow, become multilingual, find their passion, and connect with others.”
Older people joined to engage with like-minded people and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
However, the journey had not been easy.
“Due to lack of funding and resources, we struggle to meet our goals, as many of our events need materials we don’t have and that limits how many learners we can help,” Bhe said.
Nandipha Kwezi said she nominated Bhe for the Daily Dispatch Local Heroes Awards because of her dedication to youth development, education and community upliftment.
Through her work with the Literary Legends Bookclub, Amplifying Youth Voices, and various charity initiatives, she consistently demonstrated a strong moral compass and a passion for empowering young people.
“What inspires me most about Siphosihle is her selflessness, creativity and results-driven approach to making a positive impact in her community.
“Her commitment to fostering a love of learning, promoting civic education and advocating for a better future is truly commendable.”
Kwezi said that as a role model, Bhe embodied the spirit of ubuntu and her efforts had not gone unnoticed.
“I believe she deserves recognition for her tireless work, and I’m confident this nomination will motivate her to continue making a difference in the lives of others.”
