The Buffalo City Metro BCM council has approved a set of debt-relief measures aimed at easing the financial burden of retired and elderly citizens who continue to face economic challenges.

The council resolutions include the introduction of a one-off municipal debt write-off dating back several years for retired and senior citizens.

The metro described it as “a compassionate initiative designed to recognise senior citizens’ lifelong contributions and offer them a much-needed financial reprieve”.

Mayor Princess Faku welcomed the move and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to building a caring, inclusive and financially sustainable metro that prioritised the wellbeing of its senior citizens.

“We understand that many of our retired residents have devoted their lives to serving our country and our city,” Faku said.

“They have paid their dues, raised families and built communities. It is only fair that, in their golden years, we extend a helping hand.

“We are calling on all qualifying senior citizens to come forward, register and take advantage of this one-off debt-relief opportunity.

“This is our way of saying thank you and of restoring dignity to those who have given so much.”

Under the newly adopted measure, qualifying consumers will receive a one-off write-off of all outstanding municipal debt up to June 30 2025.

To qualify, applicants must meet the following conditions:

• The applicant must be the registered municipal account holder;

• The property must be used solely for residential (domestic) purposes;

• The applicant must provide proof of retirement from their employer and a valid South African ID; and

• The property must have outstanding municipal debt as at June 30 2025.

In addition to this initiative, the council has extended the city’s Debt Incentive Scheme until June 30 2027, allowing more residents to settle their municipal debts through structured relief options.

Faku emphasised that the measures went beyond financial management, they represented a moral commitment to the people of Buffalo City.

“This initiative is not only about reducing debt; it’s about restoring dignity, rebuilding trust and giving our residents a second chance to rebuild their financial stability,” she said.

“We encourage residents to use this opportunity to regularise their municipal accounts and move forward on a clean slate.

“Together, we can build a sustainable and compassionate future for Buffalo City.”

As part of its outreach and customer support efforts, BCM will again roll out its Thetha Nathi Campaign in November.

During this period, the city’s revenue management offices will open on selected Saturdays to assist residents with applications, queries and account-related issues.

Extended operating hours:

November 15, 22 and 29

8.30am – 2pm

Offices open:

• Munifin

• Mdantsane City Mall

• Civic Centre (Qonce)

The city encouraged senior citizens to visit these offices for assistance with the debt write-off registration process and Debt Incentive Scheme inquiries.
