In a time when many young people are battling unemployment and struggling with depression as a result, Nxarhuni’s Studio is a home away from home where talented young Eastern Cape artists are given free rein to express themselves.
The studio has become a space for creativity and self-expression, and as a result offers those who use it hope for their future.
Thembelani Ndingaye said when he started the studio he had wanted to promote local talent, as well as offer a home to thousands of musicians navigating the journey of becoming an artist.
Former tavern owner Ndingaye, 36, established Inga records in 2008.
“Back when I had a tavern I saw how depressed talented young people were because of a lack of support.
“It was then that I had the idea of establishing a multimedia centre to support them, but everything has a plan so I started with this recording studio, which will later expand into [the multimedia centre].
“The space is open to every talented young artist in the Eastern Cape.
“My artists are not just artists, they are business associates with positions in the company.”
He said his dream had always been to see local talent grow in the province without having to relocate to be recognised in the industry.
“I want artists to feel comfortable with staying in this province, especially those who come from rural areas.
Ndingaye said despite not having enough equipment his team produced good work.
Our producers always fight for the best quality
“Our producers always fight for the best quality, though our artists do struggle to get gigs and media interviews, but we believe we will eventually get there.”
One of the artists he has groomed is Loyiso Makhoba, whose video featuring him singing in a taxi rank went viral on social media.
“My artists push in different ways and use different approaches.
“We had Loyiso breaking the internet with his song, Uyagowa. And radio presenter Malume Womdantso is also making a name for himself.”
“I don’t have a problem with where I am — it’s part of the journey and, trust me, people are not ready for what’s coming from us this festive season.”
