A 25-year-old who took a bold step and left the safety net of her family to chase her dreams in Johannesburg, is now an employee at Showmax.

Asisipho Mofu landed a job as a customer care agent for the online streaming company, bringing her closer to becoming a media practitioner.

The Walter Sisulu University graduate with an advanced diploma in public relations management said she had always seen herself as a media person.

Her job involves answering customers’ queries about anything relating to Showmax.

Born and bred in Dikeni (Alice), she said when she moved to Johannesburg, she had been taking a leap of faith.

“When I got to Johannesburg, I looked for a job for months. I then decided to submit my CV to agencies. I was called and interviewed and that is how I landed my job.

“The most interest part about my job is being able to interact with people, seeing them leave satisfied, you get to understand many things about the media industry in the process.”

Mofu said when she relocated, she had been driven by a fear of staying at home with no idea what she would do the next day.

“My worst fear was to be unemployed. Many people were struggling.

“I wanted to break generational curses.

“I am not ignorant that some people are not folding their hands waiting for jobs to come but are sending out applications.

“I had an anxiety. What was killing me internally was not having plans for tomorrow, while other young people were going to work,” she said.

She said the job was not what she had been looking for.

However, she still saw herself growing and working on bigger stages.

“There are so many opportunities that one can go for, so I am always ready to step into another job.”

Mofu, who aspires to have her own PR firm one day, said her vision was to create employment for young people.

“Media-related studies are not as prioritised as other studies, so it would be great if I could get an opportunity where I could cater for those students and young professionals.”

The graduate, who said she believed she was destined for greater things, said this was one step closer to her dreams.

“The opportunity is a reminder that my dreams have always been valid, they just need me to put in the work,” she said.
