Peddie-born maths scientist Aviwe Sofoyiya has published a maths manual for school pupils.
Her book has received overwhelming support and has simplified mathematics topics for grade 11 and 12 pupils.
Being passionate about numeracy led Sofoyiya to create something to help pupils to thrive in the subject.
Sofoyiya said she chose to compile the book after taking note of the challenges high school pupils faced.
“My goal is to simplify complex concepts and provide accessible learning resources to help students improve their mathematical skills and performance,” Sofoyiya said.
She said it took her 32 weeks to compile the book and thoroughly review the content to ensure it was suitable for pupils.
“The main challenges included ensuring the content was both comprehensive and easy to understand. Additionally, securing the necessary resources and support was challenging.”
Sofoyiya said she had support from those close to her.
“I received firm support from family, close friends, and professionals in the field. They provided valuable feedback on the content and structure of the book, ensuring it was accurate and effective.
“I want to acknowledge the unwavering support from the Evelyn50 Publishing Company for pushing me and ensuring that this project was successful.”
Providing a sneak peek into the book, she said it explains fundamental mathematical concepts and step-by-step problem-solving techniques for mathematics problems.
“It aims to build a strong foundation to ensure pupils can follow along and grasp each concept thoroughly and provide a strong practice tool for the exam preparations,” Sofoyiya said.
Choosing to focus on grades 11 and 12 was based on those being the most fundamental grades as they prepared for final and future studies.
“A strong understanding of mathematics at this stage is essential for their success in high school level and various career paths.
“The book consists of two parts. Part one covers all the topics for mathematics paper one such as algebra, sequences and series, financial mathematics, functions, calculus, and probability.
“Part two covers topics for paper two such as statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry, and Euclidean geometry.
“By focusing on the whole syllabus, the book aims to address key challenges and enhance pupils' problem-solving skills for both Paper 1 and 2,” she said.
Making her own contribution in the academic space began in 2022 when she worked closely with high school pupils in Peddie.
“They were enrolled under the Ikamvalethu and Shell STEM programme. I took note of the lack of resources and support in rural schools, which often put pupils at a disadvantage.
“This motivated me to make a meaningful contribution to the academic space, aiming to level the playing field and provide equal opportunities for all pupils,” she said.
Sofoyiya matriculated from Masiphathisane Senior Secondary School in 2013 and pursued a diploma in maritime studies from 2014-2018.
In 2019 Sofoyiya completely changed careers and pursued a diploma in mathematical sciences, which she completed in 2021.
In 2023 she completed her advanced diploma in mathematical sciences.
“Throughout my studies for mathematical sciences, I have consistently focused on mathematics and data analysis, driven by my passion for numerical subjects and their applications,” she said.
Sofoyiya had always envisioned herself making an impact in the field of education and mathematics.
“From a young age, I was passionate about numerical subjects and motivated to address the educational disparities I witnessed.
“This vision has guided my academic and professional journey, leading me to where I am today,” she said.
