From humble beginnings on the outskirts of Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats, Thobela Bonga has always been determined to make something of his life.
Growing up as a herdboy, Bonga is now the founder and CEO of Thobela Cars — a Sandton-based dealership that sells bespoke supercars, luxury SUVs and classics including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Lotus.
“My mother was a domestic worker. It was against this backdrop of my modest beginnings that my indomitable spirit and drive for success were forged. I was a herdboy for some time which [ignited] my interest to do more to make things better at home.”
His journey in business began as a small farmer when he bought a single goat and later added a few more to his herd.
After graduating from high school, Bonga could not afford to go to university. He found work at a Morkels furniture store. With the money he made there, he enrolled at the AAA School of Advertising where he did a part-time course. He never completed the course, and after spending a few years at the furniture store, Bonga, 45, chose to follow another of his passions — buying and selling property.
He found a job at an estate agency under the Rabie Group in Century City. But when the global financial crisis of 2008 punctured the property market, he found himself without a job.
“My passion for sales, marketing and luxury naturally led me to the car industry. Combining these interests with my love for bespoke products — whether it’s property or vehicles — solidified my path as a dealmaker,” he said.
He found a job at luxury car dealership Fouche in Sandton where he spent six years, and after gaining experience in selling supercars, he decided to venture out on his own. That is how Thobela Cars was born.
It has become one of the top luxury car dealerships in South Africa, and Bonga has dreams of opening more branches, not just in Cape Town but across the country, creating work for aspiring young professionals. Long-term plans include expanding into other parts of the continent.
“At Thobela Cars, we’re all about putting the customer first. From the moment you walk through our doors, our priority is ensuring you’re comfortable and taken care of. We take the time to walk you through all the options without pressure. Our vast network allows us to source your dream car if we don’t have it on our showroom floor. Every client who walks through our door receives VIP treatment, setting us apart from the rest.”
He said Thobela Cars was a fully registered entity, employing 10 young professionals as salespeople. “They play a crucial role in ensuring we deliver the best service to our clients.”
But just like any business, Thobela Cars has faced its ups and downs, especially in the current economic environment where most people are scaling down.
“However, we see these challenges as opportunities to innovate and improve. By staying adaptable, expanding our network, and maintaining a customer-first approach, we continue to triumph over these obstacles.”
Having secured some clients in the Sadc region, Bonga sees opportunities for growth there as well.
“We have big plans for the future. When the time is right, we aim to expand our footprint across Africa. We already have clients from the Sadc region thanks to our online presence. As we grow, creating employment is a key priority for us — contributing to the fight against unemployment is central to our mission.”
Bonga says his focus is on people, and they want every client to leave with lasting memories of their experience at Thobela Cars. This is epitomised in the quality of the vehicles, and the honesty and transparency that mark every transaction, he adds.
“My message is simple: Anything you want is possible. The journey may not be easy, but drawing inspiration from those who came before us and never giving up on your dreams is essential. I look forward to welcoming you to Thobela Cars, where luxury resides.”
