East London police are searching for a group of three armed men who allegedly shot and killed two security guards and injured a customer during a dramatic shootout at Southernwood Spar on Monday morning.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said the guards, aged 48 and 49, were killed during a shootout with the armed robbers inside Malcomess Park.

“It is alleged that at approximately 08:15am three male suspects entered the complex while security guards were busy collecting money from a shop at Southernwood complex.

“One guard was standing by the entrance at Spar while the second guard was collecting the money from the safe inside the shop. While the guard who fetched the money from the safe was walking to the exit of the shop, he was shot in the upper body. The second guard also got shot in the upper body.

Both guards died at the scene, Tonjeni said.

He said a 58-year old woman was rushed to Frere Hospital and was in a stable condition by Monday afternoon.

He said the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money and two firearms belonging to the guards.
