The alumni of Gobe Commercial High School have decided to give back to their alma mater by donating maths material to the school’s grade 12 pupils.
The team, which used to attend the school in Dutywa at KwaZingxala village, said the school had shaped them to become who they are today.
In 2023, the school’s overall pass rate was 92%, with 87% of pupils passing in mathematics, hence the efforts to uplift them.
The former students, who call themselves Gobe Legends, have been working together to assist matrics with examinations as well as helping them gain access to tertiary education.
The “Gobe Legends” have been around since 2012.
Their services include hosting career exhibitions, extra classes and assisting students with applications for higher learning.
Dibanisile Gcweka, the chair of the group, said they decided to donate 81 books to assist the pupils.
“To add on top of the tutorial services, we decided to give the learners the documented tutoring material by one of our own, Nqayiya Awonke.
“This mathematics study material is to help the learners when working individually and when working together with their peers.
“We believe the material is user friendly, even during self-study.”
Gcweka said the reason they had decided to focus on maths was because it was one of the most challenging subjects across SA.
The study material mostly tackles maths paper 2 problems.
“The study material unpacks and simplifies the complexities of mathematics in paper 2, and we believe it will be of great value in addressing performance imbalance,” he said.
Gcweka said they hoped the school achieved a 90% pass rate in the subject in 2024.
“Generally, a good pass rate in mathematics often translates into a good overall pass rate for a school. This is what we also hope for in our efforts,” he said.
Gcweka said they were grateful for the impact the school had in their lives as youngsters.
“We will always forever be grateful for the training and coaching we received from the teachers when we were learners at the school.
“They went beyond teaching us the contents of the curriculum, and guided us through our childhood and teenage phases.
“Their teachings and principles still guide us even today in our respective lives,” he said.
The association was founded by the former principal, Wiseman Ngolo, who now works as a circuit manager.
“Mr Ngolo has played an incredible role in uniting the Gobe Legends over the years and has crafted the vision of the group, which is to support the school and its learners through educational innovations and initiatives.”
