Hudson Park High School is gearing up to host two major musical events this August — A Night at the Movies and A Meeting in the Park — as part of a fundraising initiative to purchase a grand piano for the school’s music department.

Both concerts will be held in the school’s Gibson Kente Hall, named after the legendary SA playwright, composer and director.

The first of the concerts, A Meeting in the Park, will take place on Saturday August 2. This is a joint collaboration between Hudson Park High School and Gqeberha’s Victoria Park High School.

Head of music Wesley Wong said the concert brought together pupils from different regions in a shared musical space, celebrating the power of collaboration and the strength of school music programmes.

“It’s really about two schools coming together to showcase what their music departments have been working on.

“The concert will feature both schools’ bands and choirs, creating a platform for learners to perform together and celebrate their shared passion for music.”

Wong said the concerts were not only about raising funds but also about giving pupils the opportunity to shine.

“These events are a way to show what our music department is capable of.

“After a successful joint concert with Victoria Park in 2024, we knew we had something special worth building on.”

The idea for the partnership was inspired by one of the event organisers, Sibongile Ponase, who has strong personal ties to Victoria Park High School.

Originally from Gqeberha, Ponase studied at Victoria Park, and his relationship with the school helped lay the foundation for this collaborative effort.

The second concert, A Night at the Movies, will be held on August 8 and 9. This cinematic-themed concert will take audiences on a musical journey through some of the most iconic film soundtracks.

Audiences can look forward to a diverse programme that includes classical, jazz and contemporary pieces, performed by the school’s choir, orchestra, band and soloists.

The event promises to be both entertaining and moving, with Hudson Park’s young musicians leading the way.

Ponase, who teaches drums and percussion and also conducts the school’s jazz band, stressed the importance of investing in a grand piano.

“As one of the top schools in East London, not owning a grand piano limits our ability to grow musically and professionally.

“If we want our learners to reach the next level in their musical development, especially those aspiring to play professionally, we need this instrument.”

Hudson Park has invited parents, alumni and the broader community to support the concerts, which promise to be meaningful celebrations of talent, collaboration and the spirit of giving.
