Eskom Expo East London marked its 30th anniversary with a showcase of innovative research and practical solutions from some of the region’s most promising young scientists.

The event, held under the banner of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, brought together learners, educators, industry leaders and government representatives to celebrate excellence in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI). It also aimed to inspire the next generation of innovators.

The regional science fair, hosted at Hudson Park High School on 9 August, featured 76 projects presented by 115 participants from Grades 4 to 12, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students from NC(V) Level 2 to NC(V) Level 4. The learners had progressed through a series of activities during the year, including workshops and district expos.

Engineering was the most popular category with 40 entries, followed by Social Science (16) and Energy (six).

East London Regional Science Fair Director, Andiswa Boqwana, said: “Our gratitude goes to Eskom, our main sponsor, for their continued support in making this platform possible; along with the Rotary Club, one of the special award sponsors, for recognising excellence in the category winners; the judges for their dedication and expertise; and the teachers for guiding and mentoring the learners. Above all, heartfelt thanks go to the learners whose hard work and passion for discovery are at the heart of the fair’s success.”

A total of five gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals were awarded. Special Awards from Eskom, which included Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers, went to:

  • Best female: Lunathi Qongqo, Hudson Park High School, Grade 10 – A solution for traffic congestion
  • Best innovation: Lazola Nombakuze and Khazimla Gcoboza, New Generation Primary School, Grade 7 – Cleaning Robot
  • Best energy project: Azosule Naphakade and Uzuqhame Gcadana, Amalinde Primary School, Grade 6 – Biogas
  • Best development project: Aluxolo Yanga, Bulelani Senior Secondary School, Grade 12 – The Earth's rotational movement

Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, Mologadi Motshele, said: “Through the Eskom Expo, learners are exposed to real-world scientific research, innovation challenges, and opportunities for personal growth. They learn how to design experiments, solve problems, communicate their findings, and think critically. These are skills that are essential in both academic and career contexts.”

Other special awards included a one-year full tuition bursary to Rhodes University, awarded to Great Ikechukwu Umejesi from Hudson Park High School. The floating trophy for the school with the most participants went to Tsholomqa High School, while Hudson Park High School took the trophy for best-performing school.

Category awards included:

  • Computer Sciences and Software Development: Great Ikechukwu Umejesi, Hudson Park High School, Grade 11 – AI for stress management and mental wellness
  • Engineering: Sakhe Peter and Anami Mbekula, St Theresa Primary School, Grade 6 – Building a hydraulic robotic arm
  • Environmental Studies: Akahlulwa Veyishile, Port Rex Technical School, Grade 9 – Efficient way of integrating carbon capture with carbon breakdown
  • Social Sciences: Xolani Ngo, Bulelani High School, Grade 12 – From books to beat
  • Biomedical and Medical Sciences: Vuyisa Hofisi, Bulelani High School, Grade 12 – Seeing Sound
  • Physics, Astronomy and Space Sciences: Aluxolo Grimmis, Bulelani High School, Grade 12 – The Earth's rotation
  • Earth Sciences: Milani Mjiji, Port Rex Technical School, Grade 10 – Cleaning dirty water
  • Energy: Azosule Naphakade, Amalinde Primary School, Grade 6 – Biogas
  • Project with Great Potential: Lelomso Noholoza and Luphumezo Bobi, Nomvuyo Primary School, Grade 7 – The Drone

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said the event was an important part of SA’s broader strategy to invest in skills development and strengthen STEMI education at school level.

“It offers a dynamic platform for young, aspiring scientists to present their innovative ideas and research projects, gaining valuable experience and exposure to future careers in scientific and technological fields. Importantly, it also promotes inclusivity by encouraging participation from learners in previously disadvantaged communities and empowering young girls to pursue STEM-related studies. The creativity, passion, and problem-solving skills on display highlight the remarkable potential of our youth,” said Chetty.

Learners who excelled at the regional fair will go on to compete at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair later this year.
