The ANC in the Amathole region has new leaders.
More than 200 delegates have gathered at the fourth regional conference currently under way at the East London ICC to elect the new leaders.
On Friday evening, the provincial leadership announced the results.
ANC MP Sheila Xhego has been elected as regional chair, Amathole district municipality mayor Anele Ntsangani as deputy chair, regional task team coordinator Nombuyekezo Nkwenkwezi-Ncetezo as regional secretary, Ngqushwa local municipality mayor Sanga Maneli as deputy secretary and Amahlathi local municipality mayor Onke Mgunculu as treasurer.
Provincial communications head Gift Ngqondi said the officials were uncontested.
Though ANC elective conferences had been marred by claims of irregularities and court action in the past, Ngqondi said the party did everything by the book.
“All necessary steps were taken to ensure a credible outcome following the adoption of credentials,” he said.
“All processes leading to the nomination and eventually the election of the REC (regional executive committee) officials were characterised by generally notable discipline and adherence to conference rules.”
Ngqondi said the newly elected leaders were expected to unite the party in the region.
The party also wants them “to continue building a formidable and effective ANC and deliver (a) decisive victory at the upcoming 2024 national elections”.
“The provincial executive committee committee members who are deployed to attend the conference are impressed by the diligence with which the delegates are participating in the conference,” Ngqondi said.
The two-day conference will wrap up on Saturday with commissions and a vote for additional members.
