Dissatisfied ActionSA leaders were unable to submit a petition signed by more than 6,000 residents and ratepayers on Friday at Buffalo City Metro’s speaker’s office, as it was closed.

The petition includes thousands of comments from residents stating they cannot afford the electricity hikes recently approved by the National Energy Regulator of SA.

BCM ActionSA regional secretary Michele Kay said they were unable to submit the petition due to the office being closed.

“We are going to go back and write to the office of the speaker again and ask for an appointment and at a specific time,” she said.

Kay said they had requested an appointment early this week but were not given a specific time and date.

“They said we should come to the office and submit it,” she said.

“It needs to be as soon as possible because people are going to be starting to receive their bills for July with the new tariff hike.

“We are opposing those hikes, so it has to happen as soon as possible next week.”

According to an email from the speaker’s office, ActionSA was informed that the petition could be dropped off between 8am-4pm, Monday to Friday, without the need for an appointment.
