The DA Student Organisation is back at the helm of Nelson Mandela University's student body after it won the Student Representative Council election by a landslide on Tuesday.

DA Student Organisation (DASO) secured 79% of overall seats.

The organisation dominated four of the five campuses, taking 34 of the 43 Student Representative Council (SRC) seats.

Student leader Lathitha Mbuzwana has been tipped as the SRC president-elect by DASO.

DA Eastern Cape provincial chair Yusuf Cassim congratulated the students for their victory by beating the EFF Student Command out of power.

“The DA would like to congratulate the students of NMU for standing together to rescue their institution and usher in an era of stability and good governance by voting for DASO and their president-elect, securing a landslide victory in the SRC election.”

Cassim said the win marks a significant improvement from the 2023 SRC election, in which DASO received only 22% of the vote while the EFF held a majority of seats.

“It is clear that support for the DA continues to grow among young people.

“The DA has faith in this new generation of young leaders, and we are excited to see the positive changes they will bring during their term.
