Foster should remain at Burnley during challenging times — Radebe

Staying put seen as being good for both his personal and sporting progress

Leeds United and SA soccer legend Lucas Radebe has suggested Bafana Bafana forward Lyle Foster stick with Burnley in England despite their demotion from the Premiership, emphasising that it could be positive for his personal growth.

The 23-year-old Foster finds himself in the tricky situation of either jumping ship and looking for a new challenge or remaining with Burnley to fight in the English Championship and regain their top-flight status.

He won a championship title race when Burnley were promoted to the Premiership after the 2022/2023 season.

The upcoming transfer window will play a crucial role in the decision regarding his future.

He is on a long-term deal with The Clarets until June 2028 but that has not stopped European teams from showing interest in him

Speculation emerged about a possible reunion between Foster and his former mentor, Vincent Kompany, due to their past relationship.

Foster joined Burnley in 2023 while Kompany was manager. However, he recently left Burnley to take control of Bayern Munich in Germany.

English fan-favourite Radebe, who played 201 games for Leeds from 1994 to 2005, recommended that Foster think carefully about his next step, highlighting the potential for continued development throughout his career.

“For me, it is not a failure going down [from EPL to the championship].

“You are still playing at the highest level, in the championship, there is a lot of competition, actually more than the Premier League.

“It will show his character if he stays at Burnley,” Radebe told the Dispatch on Tuesday evening at the launch of the second edition of the Betway 12th man programme in Melrose.

“Yes, there are opportunities out there whether you play at the lowest or the highest level but when you play at the highest level, how far can you go?

“If you play at the low league, you know you can go a step up.

“He is an asset; he is still playing at the highest level for both club and country.

“He has done so well, he will get his chance to play longer.

“Maybe in the premier league or somewhere else, but he should focus on Burnley at the moment.”

Foster gave his all despite Burnley’s lack of success last season.

He scored five goals and provided three assists in 25 league games.

However, his development and advancement were hindered by a mental health crisis three months into the season.

He missed three months of action and did not play in the 2023 Afcon finals in Ivory Coast earlier in 2024.

But he was back in the fold in head coach Hugo Broos’s overall Bafana Bafana squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe at the start of June.
