Border Rugby Union executive member Thabo Sixam has resigned, citing the union’s alleged lack of proper governance.

The news of Sixam’s stepping down sent shock waves through the rugby fraternity.

He had been with Border for the past four years and was in charge of looking after Border Rugby’s club affairs.

In January, BRU had advertised the job of general manager after Mpumelelo Tshume vacated the position.

Tshume was appointed about two years ago when the union was still wallowing under SA Rugby administration.

He helped the union emerge from the mother body’s shadow after Border settled its long-term debt, which was estimated at R21m.

Tshume initially said his term was for five months only, though he stayed on for longer, including for an acting position stint.

It is understood that Border have appointed experienced sports manager Mthunzi Hewu, who was previously with the Nelson Mandela University, though this has yet to be confirmed by the union.

Border Rugby president Zuko Badli said on Sunday that the appointment of a GM had been sent to the general membership of the union and SA Rugby for further approval.

“As the executive of the union we are accountable to the general council of the union, and as such it would be improper at this time to respond to any questions pertaining to the appointment of the GM,” he said.

Sixam took exception to the appointment of the new GM, alleging due process had not been followed.

“Through the ups and the downs, I regret to inform you that today I am handing in my resignation from my position within the executive committee and all rugby-related activities,” Sixam said in a statement.

“I cannot continue operating within the environment any more. I have strived to ensure that the interest of all clubs is valued and carried through, and sadly, now it doesn’t seem to be the case.

“The latest matter is the appointment of the general manager. The executive has refused to look into certain matters or reach a collective arrangement (after minutes of meetings being made available to the union’s general council).

“I chose to distance myself from the processes followed.

“Out of my integrity and the love of rugby, I felt it best for me to rather resign,” Sixam said.

Badli dismissed Sixam’s claims, stating that all processes were followed in the appointment.

“Let me state, unequivocally, the union followed due process in the appointment of the general manager. All relevant background checks were conducted.

“We remain committed to transparency, accountability and long-term development of rugby in the region,” he said in a separate statement issued on Friday.

The news of the appointment of the GM and Sixam’s resignation has come just a couple of months away from the BRU elections.
